Photo Retouching vs. Color Correcting

As of late I've been receiving a lot of inquiries as to whether my editing includes "photoshop work" or if I retouch all of my images. It is a great question because every photographer does their editing in a different manner.

To answer this I want to dispel my workflow. All of my work includes color correcting. What this means is that I never give a photo straight out of my camera. I consider that to be poor workmanship. No camera can expose every photo perfectly. In addition every camera changes the colors in between shots. So one shot could be warmer with more magentas and yellows while another could be colder with more blues and greens. Think fluorescent over incandescent lights. So what this includes is:

Color temperature adjustments
Brightness and darkness adjustments
Overall exposure corrections
Creative cropping

This is all done in Lightroom.

Photo retouching is Photoshop work and covers the gamut of types of corrections. This is great for wall art, professional portfolios, professional submissions, albums, etc. With great detail I correct the exposure of the image even further, on top of the previous Lightroom corrections. I actually go in and paint different areas to be brighter or darker. I then stylize the image according to the needs of the person or according to the medium that the photo will be showcased. It also includes:

Natural skin retouching (evening out skin tones, eye/teeth brightening, blemish removals, etc.)
Color enhancements
Removing distracting elements

If I am printing the image I apply the proper ICC profile according to the printing lab or my professional printer. Yes...more than you should want to know. Printing is an art. For wall art or albums I really go the extra mile. If the client is going to be doing their own printing or using the images for submissions I apply the basic sRGB color profile that will give a standard use for the different types of medias.

No room for nerves; the photographer is the director

I have been a photographer for about three years or so. Self taught, there is a lot I've had to learn on my own. For some reason the concept of nerves during a photoshoot and how to deal with them came to mind. I would say 75% of the people that I have photographed have been nervous. I don't mean slight nerves, I mean the kind where they feel completely out of their element; fish out of water. Now thinking about my demographic; actors, models, couples that have a built in support, you would think that wouldn't exist. But the worst part is that 95% of the time, I'm nervous. Thoughts like, "will my equipment fail, will my ideas be horrible, will the shots be in focus, are they judging my non professional apartment 'studio' or my behind the scenes ghetto props, will they hate the photos I give them, did I get enough good shots, this lighting sucks." One time I was photographing a wedding and my flash fried. I was sitting in the bridal suite on the floor when I started to smell burnt batteries...."shit..." There are no other words than that. Actually there are but they're much worse. I didn't have a fast enough backup flash. Champagne glasses were toasting as I froze then slinked into my corner. My eyes probably the size of golf balls, while thoughts ran a million miles a minute.

"Are you okay?"

"Absolutely, just organizing my equipment," something like that.

"Okay, higher the ISO, hope that daylight hours don't run out, utilize my very slow flash during the dance but make sure to have it on low power so that it won't lag too much in between shots, so that means I need a wider aperture, more possibilities of out of focus shots, PLEASE DON'T BE OUT OF FOCUS!"

But there are no room for nerves. As a photographer you are the director. You are the inspiration. You are the leader. You can't show your nerves for one second. If anyone catches wind of it, they will absorb those nerves and multiply them. Or worse...have doubts in you! So you direct; you keep calm, chat about all sorts of random topics, ask a million questions. You heighten what works, you lessen what doesn't. Part of this is why I really, really, shall I add another really, want to become a film director. I live off of those 95% nerves. Taking those nerves and molding them into ideas that live and breathe in front of the camera.

So maybe there is room for nerves, just really well controlled ones.

Yoga - Wesley

I have a huge love and passion for yoga. My goal is to take it three to five times a week preferably six. It's such a huge physical challenge, always something new. This photoshoot was a huge challenge for me being my first yogi photoshoot. You have to capture the full body, there is not a lot of room for cropping. I'm glad to say that I feel proud of my accomplishment. Wesley was great and patient and very willing to try new ideas.

I miss shooting conceptual portraiture. It's one of my favorite things to shoot, if not my favorite. I was recently asked what I mean by conceptual photography. At the moment I didn't know how to answer. After some thought, I now define it as having a sense of surrealism in my work. When I shoot my future movies, I want to shoot 'Amelie' type films that have a lot of surrealism. This is Brooke (red/blue) and Daonne (purple).

I spent literally hours looking through my top favorite 100 photos. Yes, 100 photos made my top favorite. Luckily I managed to reduce my choices. I can't wait for them to see all the photos because, whether they realize it or not, they are amazingly beautiful, in love people, that shine through the lens.

'Send Me Love' - Film Short

I can't put into words what this last film shoot meant to me. It's indescribable. As an actor I felt that I grew so much. It was such a challenging role to tap into such sad emotions. I must thank the director for helping me with this. This is my true love; film sets. It's not about any final product that makes me happy, it's about being in the middle of talented people creating art and taking part in that creative process.

Week 7 of 52: Alexander; Art is Resistance

In addition to this being week 7, this was also my first camping trip experience. It's so incredible how easy it is to forget that there is a gorgeous world outside of NYC. America is so big and incredible. I feel that I sometimes forget that there are simple things out there that I haven't taken the time to stop, explore, and appreciate. Life is way too short. I love my life and I'm very happy but I feel that sometimes I'm so far from being at peace in my life. I'm always concerned and worrying about what's next and what I haven't accomplished. It's nice to get away from that. This is Alex, he humored me in allowing me to do week 7 on the camping trip.

Today I was asked how I define my photography style. That might not have been the way the question was stated, but that's how I remember it. I've been thinking about that and I realize that I can't quite define it, not yet at least, but I do know that it is there. I feel very ecstatic knowing that slowly I'm creating a style that is all my own. At first a lot of my photos were based on mimicking. I would try copying photos that inspired me. Even though I do have an "ideas folder" and "favorites on flickr" that I still refer back to, I realize that now even when I get inspired from something else, the results look different. It's my own. I don't think I'm at the level that I want to be yet but I am happy where I stand. It's been a journey and I finally feel that I am part of my style, in other words, I see myself in every photograph that I take. It feels personal and I love it.

I've decided to start a new project called 52 Weeks of Portraiture. The idea is to take a photo of someone once a week. The idea behind this, is to force myself to build my portfolio a lot faster by making sure I have at least one photo a week of another person. This is my best friend Jen. The 365 Self Portrait Project on Flickr

Anyone that knows me really well, knows that I am addicted to flickr. It is the greatest outlet for a photographer to receive feedback on one's own work and also learn about other photographers. At some point during my infatuation I found that my favorite flickr streams were the ones that were of self portraits. Many of which were part of this project called 365, where you do a self portrait once a day for a year. There is something about capturing yourself that no one will be able to accomplish because you are putting yourself out there as a photographer and as a subject that gives a dual edge of hmmm...vulnerability, I guess the best word would be. You're also putting yourself out there twice to be judged. Plus it can come across as self conceited. My view on that is that a lot of people post photos of themselves on other outlets, facebook, blog about themselves etc. This is my outlet.

I have found myself growing as a photographer and finding a voice that I couldn't be able to reach other wise. I can't say that I have done consecutive days, I mean there have been times where a week goes by without a photo. I also can't say that my work is brilliant but it's forcing me to grow and stretch my creativity and my equipment to it's limits. Though I know the limits are much higher. But how exciting to reach those limits.

Part of what I have discovered is that I want to narrow my scope of photography to be of two things; conceptual portraiture, and food photography. [Food photography has another reason that I will discuss in another blog.] I want to capture people's emotions. When I look at a magazine and see editorial work, it's gorgeous and very technical but what it is missing... is emotion. So I want to start creating work that is almost like a movie in a still image. I'm working on it. My portfolio doesn't reflect that yet. But it will! This is the route that I'm going for.

I just have to say though, kind of unrelated, but even before flickr and 365 one of the photographers that has moved me the most has been Cig Harvey. Her "personal story" as she calls it, is amazing. I'm also falling in love with Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Peter Lindbergh. And of course my fellow unknown flickrites that have some AMAZING work!

Wedding: Second Shooter

I shot a wedding for Blue Daisy Weddings as a second shooter. I got to take some fun shots of the bride and groom with a Lensbaby. A Lensbaby is a lens that distorts an image and the light within the image. You can create hearts or other shapes within the image with this lens as well. These are fun shots and of course not the main shots that I turn in. No processing, straight from the camera. The couple, Allegra and Michael were awesome. They had an after party to play Garage Band. The third photo is of the bride singing it up to GB.

'Julia'-Actress

I don't have any photos for this post. At least not yet. In addition to various roles that I have been acting in recently, I got the opportunity to be 'Julia' a character for a Syracuse University graduate thesis film directed by Jonathan Waters. It was a long shoot, 35 pages worth, in which my character is in every scene. It's about a girl who comes to age much later in life than she should have after discovering she is pregnant from her ex boyfriend. This experience was amazing. We still have some reshoots to do but I already miss this character. It was shot on film, which meant one or two takes for each scene. I love acting. (See the next post on how I got back into this.)

'Last Night'-Actress

Let me start this by saying, I moved to NY for acting. End of story. Other reasons were parallels to this reason. I did a lot of studying, a LOT of it. But when it came to auditioning there was something about it that just didn't make sense in my head. So I gave up acting for a long time. One reason was because I became broke and started working for B&H which allowed me to travel to many places in this country but cut down on my time. So about two months ago I picked it up again and it's funny, things just started coming into place. My resume already looks meaty in such a short amount of time. This has always been my true love. One of the projects that I worked on was 'Last Night,' a NYU film directed by Marty Lopez.

The film crew was amazing. They worked incredibly fast and so professionally. I'm very nervous about seeing it. I might be big on posting photos and other things online but when it comes to acting I'd rather do and do and never see what I have done. I love film acting but it's a lot more challenging because the story is cut into little pieces, many times filmed out of order, and many times the scenes are filmed in one or two takes. So it's hard stringing a story in your head about where you were in a scene that you haven't done yet. But I love it nevertheless and shall continue with this as much as I can.

The film was about the last time a couple sees each other before they part ways.

'Asymmetrical'-Producer/1st AD/UPM/Set Photographer

I've been working hard to build up my producing portfolio. My most recent project was a film called 'Asymmetrical' directed by AnnaRose (following blog). The film is about a father who is verbally abusive to his daughter. With the mother out of the picture he can get away with that. There is a sudden twist at the end of the film. It's based around Edgar Allan Poe's, 'Tell Tale Heart'.

In addition to the experience of dealing with producing I was also first A.D. (assistant director), UPM (unit production manager) and set photographer. You wear many hats when you're on smaller sets. This experience was truly amazing and I had a lot of fun. I really enjoy having input into filmmaking, that's what I want all my film experiences to be about, of course also working with amazing filmmakers. I wasn't expecting to be first A.D. and I really got a kick out of that. I'm like the "mom" on the set. "Come on guys we need to get picture up..." Wearing so many hats, my job as set photographer kind of was not a priority.

Portraiture in my Apartment Part Trois

AnnaRose is a director who asked me to produce her film. I met her on the set of JSOK's film. When I met her I remembered thinking, what a great face. She has multiple facets to her. She's a guy's girl and girl's girl all in one. She's funny and sweet and overall beautiful. What I loved about photographing her was that she wasn't a professional model. This made her emotions and expressions come out in a very different way. Almost vulnerable. I loved it.

I have said it many times before to the people that I love. I love love love food. I love the amazing tastes and smells that can be created with a little dedication. I have been taking this love to the next level by experimenting everyday more and more with food. I have tons to learn but I have learned so much in this last year. I'm really interested in the science behind food and have been reading up a lot on how different ingredients and cooking/baking methods change how food reacts.

My new love for cooking and baking comes with a new love, food photography. To photograph food is to capture a universal experience. We are all connected with food. I started this project a couple of weeks ago and had help from my pastry chef cousin, Yarissa and my mom. It has always been a big part of my family to love the kitchen.

Portraiture in my Apartment Part Deux

I setup another photoshoot in my apartment with a model and makeup artist that I met through Craigslist. They were both hispanic and it was nice to get back into my roots and work in Spanish. With the photos below I wanted to try some drastic lighting. It was a bit of a challenge but I like how the strips of light turned out.

Portraiture in my Apartment

In my apartment I have managed to do a lot of shooting. Even with my limited space and even with only two lights I feel I have accomplished a lot. One of my most recent photoshoots involved my roommate Jennifer, who also happens to be one of my best friends. She is a therapist who just recently got promoted to 'Senior Social Worker.' She deals with some hard core substance abuse-users. She is one of the most patient people I have ever met and she can listen until the sun comes up. She also allows me to shoot her with almost nothing on. Isn't she a hottie!? I did her makup. I have gotten a lot of great compliments on the photo with the Christmas lights. 'Annie's Wake'-Set Decorations

Part of working on the film 'Wake' was having the assignment to take some photographs to put in the main character's apartment as set decorations. The theme was limbs. With the help of my dear friend and fellow photographer, Amber Poe we came up with some interesting photos. We might have gotten carried away making them too gory. We made fake blood out of as much food products as you could imagine. The photo with the hand was taken by Amber as it's my hand. I took the photo of Amber's feet. Producing the Film 'Annie's Wake'

I started freelancing in September of 2008 after leaving my secure job at B&H Photo. I really wanted to explore the world on the edge of not knowing what would come next. This has lead me to work on various projects that I probably wouldn't have been able to do. One was working with JSOK on a film called 'Annie's Wake'. He's an amazing producer who is so knowledgeable of the film industry. He offered me an opportunity to help him produce his graduate NYU 3rd year film to help me gain experience. I loved the process. I also got to do the still photography.

'Esquineros' - the Film

'Esquineros' is an amazing film made by my friend Dom. He's a talented filmmaker, writer, and music maker. So I was helping him out on his shoot. One of my tasks was to round up '"Esquineros" to see if they would be willing to stand in as background extras. "Esquineros" are illegal latin workers that wait on the side of the road, waiting to be picked up to do work such as construction. I had always seen them around my neighborhood but never really spoken to them. (Now mind you a lot of them make most women feel uncomfortable.) But the ones I spoke to that day were very nice. It just made me think how incredibly lucky I am to come from a Latin country that gives us automatic U.S. citizenship. It puts a lot into perspective. As bad as things might ever get, at least I can never be "kicked" out of the U.S. That's a solid feeling.

My Love of Food

I have an immense obsession with cooking and baking. Inspired by my mom and my cousin, Yari. I buy 2-3 cooking magazines a month, have tons of books, and can watch the Food Network when I have it, for HOURS! I mean hours, like all day. Good Eats, and Everyday Italian are some of my favorites. I even asked for kitchen tools for Christmas. (Digital Scales must have been made in heaven.) So what better combination then to start shooting food photography. Especially when I cook and bake so much. This is one of my first endeavors. I haven't shot that many plates yet. This photo is of a Kahlua, coffee, chocolate custard. Tastes so good!!!!

Experimenting at the School of Visual Arts

This last semester I took a course at the School of Visual Arts in Magazine Lighting. It was amazing to have access to any kind of equipment that you could possibly imagine. The best part of the class was that the teacher just let us go at it. All he would recommend was how many lights to use and maybe to try a specific kind of light. But the setups were ours. I learned so much just by trying and not having someone tell me how to setup lights. These are some of my favorites.

Halloween Parade

Every year since I have been in New York I have made it a point to photograph the New York City parade. First year I pretended I was the press with a fellow photographer and they let us into the middle of the parade with no problem but I had no idea what I was doing. Second year I went, I knew a bit more of what I was doing but couldn't get close to the parade and security had changed where only people with press passes could get in. Bummer. Third year I went to the beginning of the parade. I realized that if you get their early enough no one asks questions and people are still setting up and willing to pose. This was my fourth year. This photo above caused so much commotion on my flickr account. It skyrocketed my viewing and gave me more hits than any other photo. (And it's not the first naked body painting photo that I have put up.)

Experimenting at the Maine Media Workshops

B&H was kind enough to send an employee up to Maine each week all summer to give support to the Maine Media Workshops. In the process we were all allowed to take a class. This was my second year there. Maine is gorgeous in the summer! I took a course in lighting with an amazing teacher named Chris Stanford. He's an amazing photographer who's managed to shoot multiple covers of Rolling Stone Magazine, many serious editorials and tons of famous people. His philosophy is to think outside the box and look at light from unexpected angles. He uses equipment that would surprise most high-end professional photographers, such as a tiny crappy reflector, and many other tricks. He gave each of us one that he made. It's amazing!
